A deli (which actually was not bad). I think I ate green beans smoothered in butter and PORK one night...didn't realize it and almost puked the pork out...pigs and greens? What?

I realized that while these folks knew greasy and fried food was bad for them and the culprit of their high blood pressure, diabetes, and bad heart conditions, they didn't care. They liked what foods they liked, made no excuses, and were going to continue doing the same thing.

Reminded me that I actually like living in Jersey with my Whole Foods and local farmer's markets!AJ Gregoryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04531239044392302104noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9227003.post-4146828282001328952009-12-04T16:14:22.960-06:002009-12-04T16:14:22.960-06:006p01053528eadd970c - Glad to see I'm not alone...6p01053528eadd970c - Glad to see I'm not alone. :) You're right about the limited options in suburbs vs metropolitan areas. In this case, too, I think, my friend is just not as willing to try something new. And like you say, Applebee's was the only familiar thing she could think of.

And, don't get me wrong, I still love love my collard greens and cornbread - just minus the bacon grease.Nichole Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18413235904753153306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9227003.post-45535613436339259702009-12-04T13:11:14.718-06:002009-12-04T13:11:14.718-06:00Last week when my mom was in town, we took her out...Last week when my mom was in town, we took her out to eat. We chose. Because if it were up to her, we'd have gone to Appleby's too. I think what happens when you live in places with more diversity, our tastes change dramatically. For example, we couldn't go to a Vietnamese restaurant while my mom was here because it was just too 'different.' Granted, my mom lives in Houston, but she lives in the suburbs. And in the suburbs, tried and true familiarity is always the best choice.

As for how you used to eat when you were growing up - you're right, those were the kinds of things that were in everyone (else's) kitchen. Right down to collards. Now I'm jonesing.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9227003.post-38251022112435629122009-11-24T08:33:35.475-06:002009-11-24T08:33:35.475-06:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Jonathan McIntoshhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15584850947644962722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9227003.post-17777378242217921632009-11-23T22:45:38.193-06:002009-11-23T22:45:38.193-06:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.J.W. Many of the callers after his segment echoed your comments. "Lack of integrity" seemed to be a frequent way of describing him. I couldn't agree more.
